"Our Hair is an Extension of Who We Are Spiritually"

Lisa Kenoras

Indigenous Stylist

Lisa Kenoras is Secwépemc & W̱SÁNEĆ hairdresser with 10+ experience and graduated from Vancouver Island University in 2013. Sacred Flair was launched in May of 2022, which is a mobile hair care service that is accessible to Indigenous individuals, families, and communities. Lisa has a passion for applying Indigenous teachings and practices to the sacred protocols around hair care. She understands it to be a transfer of energy and ceremony from stylist to client. Sacred Flair is based on the need for creating safe spaces for Indigenous hair care practices and protecting the ceremonial teachings that surround Indigenous spirituality. This is spiritual work for Lisa as an Indigenous woman and stylist, to take on the responsibility of the spiritual energy carried through -before, during, and after the ceremony/services provided, this goes for the medicines that are used for the space, from Sweetgrass, Sage, Bear grease, Sweetgrass hair oil, etc. Indigenous identity is connected through our hair and how we connect to our Indigenous culture, teachings and ancestral roots. Lisa wants to break the stigma around Indigenous hair and the ceremonial practices that follow, as Indigenous hair has been discriminated against historically and politically. Sacred Flair is designed to revitalize these powerful teachings we carry with our hair and create an environment that honours the spiritual connection that has existed since time immemorial. As Indigenous people, we deserve to feel safe and heard when receiving these sacred and personal services.

Services

Haircuts & Ceremony

Haircuts are based on the length and thickness per person, depending on the time and products used during the service. Safe spaces are created for ceremony between the stylist and person through energy, medicine, products, protocols, and spirituality. The first visit is usually a little longer because of consultation and relationship building between the stylist and person. (2hr min.)

Bear Grease Treatments

The bear grease treatment is a traditional medicine that has been used by many Indigenous Nations for Indigenous hair care. Bear grease is an amazing hair product for smoothing and moisturizing dry hair, hair strengthening, loss of density and thinning.

(45 mins. or overnight)

Braids & Styles

Braiding is a traditional hairstyle that has been used since time immemorial as it carries our energy, strength, prayers, knowledge, and ancestral lineage. Bear grease and other products are used during this service, traditionally braiding the hair keeps it in healthy condition. There are many Indigenous-inspired styles that may be unique in style or it may even represent a specific Nation or tribe. (60-80 mins)

”I was so excited to see an Indigenous mobile hair business starting in Lkwungen and Wsanec territories and believe it's such a needed service in our communities. Lisa was very understanding when I shared my access needs. When we sat down together, I felt comfortbale to share some of my story and I was happy to learn a bit about Lisa too and how some of our lives overlap. I'm elated to be building a relationship around Coast Salish hair care.
